RESEARCH ACTIVITY
Íñigo Lacosta Colorado is a PhD Candidate in Architecture within the doctoral programme in Composition, History and Technique in Architecture and Urbanism in Madrid, Spain.
His work is carried out within the research line Theory, Site and Project, under the supervision of PhD Aurora Herrera Gómez and PhD Sonia Izquierdo Esteban.
His research explores utopian thought as a critical tool in contexts of conflict, with particular focus on the case of Ukraine at war. Through an approach that combines theoretical analysis with direct territorial engagement, the thesis investigates the role of utopia in the architectural and social reconstruction of devastated cities, as well as its capacity to imagine possible futures from within the ruins of the present.
In 2025, he conducted fieldwork in Ukraine during the war, with stays in Kyiv, Lviv, and other Ukrainian cities, documenting the destruction of the urban fabric and investigating, on site, how local communities inhabit, resist, and rebuild their environment.
The research proposes a critical reading of utopia as a projective strategy in times of crisis, interweaving theory, memory, architecture, and territorial transformation.
ACTIVIDAD INVESTIGADORA
Íñigo Lacosta Colorado realiza un Doctorado en Arquitectura en el marco del programa de Composición, Historia y Técnica en la Arquitectura y el Urbanismo en Madrid, España.
Su trabajo se desarrolla dentro de la línea de investigación Teoría, Lugar y Proyecto, y está dirigido por la Dra. Aurora Herrera Gómez y la Dra. Sonia Izquierdo Esteban.
Su investigación aborda el pensamiento utópico como herramienta crítica, con especial atención al caso de Ucrania en guerra. A través de un enfoque que combina el análisis teórico con la intervención territorial directa, la tesis explora el papel de la utopía en la reconstrucción arquitectónica y social de ciudades devastadas, así como su capacidad para imaginar futuros posibles desde las ruinas del presente.
Durante 2025 ha realizado trabajo de campo en Ucrania durante la guerra, con estancias en Kiev, Leópolis, y otras ciudades ucranianas, documentando la destrucción del tejido urbano e investigando, sobre el terreno, las formas en que comunidades locales habitan, resisten y reconstruyen su entorno.
La investigación propone una lectura crítica de la utopía como estrategia proyectual en tiempos de crisis, articulando teoría, memoria, arquitectura y transformación del territorio
